Activity: “The Sound of Silence”

Course: A Levels-2nd year
Skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing
Grouping: whole-class, in pairs and individually
Material resources: computer, music videos, internet connection, hand-outs with lyrics of the song.
Methodology:
- 1st activity: watching a music video of the song “ the sound of silence” by Simon and Garfunkel and another music video of the song by the American band “Disturbed”.
- 2nd activity: reading the lyrics of the song “the sound of silence” (individually and in turns).
- 3rd activity: looking up unknown words from the lyrics of the song in pairs and/ or individually. Internet resources: wordreference.com, linguee.com
- 4th activity: discussion about the meaning of the song.
- 5th activity: translation of some resources on the meaning of the song.
- 6th activity: brainstorming. Use of the video as a brainstorming tool to write down ideas on the meaning of the sound of silence. (individually).
- 7th activity: writing. What does “The Sound of Silence” mean to you? Write down a composition of about 200 words.
